Canto Latino is an annual outdoor festival that brings together youth across Uniting Voices programs and the Chicago community for a celebration of the city's proud Latin American heritage through song, story and dance.

This year's Canto Latino brings music from South America to the forefront. Singers from our Neighborhood Choir Program will come together to perform different staples of music like samba (Brazil), mapalé (Colombia), morenada (Bolivia), joropo (Venezuela) and many more. The concert will feature classic folk songs as well as contemporary music that celebrates the national identities of different South American countries. In addition to on-stage performances, the festival features food, activities, and connections with various local businesses and cultural representatives. We look forward to an exciting day of song, dance and community!

Canto Latino is part of the Chicago Park District's #NightOutintheParks series.

Songs and Translations

Solo le pido a Dios

León Gieco, arr. La Colmena

Lyrics:

Verso 1 (Solo):
Solo le pido a Dios
Que el dolor no me sea indiferente,
Que la reseca muerte no me encuentre,
Vacío y solo, sin haber
hecho lo suficiente

Verso 2 (Solo):
Solo le pido a Dios
Que lo injusto no me sea indiferente,
Que no me abofeteen la otra mejilla
Después que una garra me
arañó esta suerte.

Coro (All):
Solo le pido a Dios
Que la guerra no me sea indiferente,
Es un monstruo grande y pisa fuerte
Toda la pobre inocencia de la gente

Verso 3 (Solo):
Solo le pido a Dios
Que el engaño no me sea indiferente,
Si un traidor puede más que unos cuantos,
Que esos cuantos no lo olviden fácilmente.

Verso 4 (Solo):
Solo le pido a Dios
Que el futuro no me sea indiferente,
Desahuciado está él que tiene que marchar
A vivir una cultura diferente.

Repetir Coro (x2)

Solo le pido a Dios

León Gieco, arr. La Colmena

English Translation:

Verse 1 (Solo):
I only ask of God
That I not be indifferent to pain,
That the arid death does not find me,
Empty and lonely, without
having done enough.

Verse 2 (Solo):
I only ask of God
That I not be indifferent to injustice,
That they do not slap me on the other cheek
After a claw scratched
me this luck.

Chorus (All):
I only ask of God
That I not be indifferent to war,
It is a huge monster & it crushes hard
The poor innocence of the people.

Verse 3 (Solo):
I only ask of God
That I not be indifferent to deception,
If a traitor is more powerful than [the] many,
That these many don’t forget him easily.

Verse 4 (Solo):
I only ask of God
That I not be indifferent to the future,
Hopeless is the one who has to leave
And live a different culture.

Repeat Chorus (x2)

Alma llanera

Pedro Elías Gutiérrez and Rafael Bolívar, arr. Ángel Sauce

Lyrics:

Verso 1:
Yo nací en esta ribera
del Arauca vibrador,
soy hermano de la espuma,
de las garzas, de las rosas,
soy hermana de la espuma,
de las garzas, de las rosas
y del sol, y del sol.

Verso 2:
Me arrulló la viva Diana
de la brisa en el palmar,
y por eso tengo el alma
como el alma primorosa,
y por eso tengo el alma
como el alma primorosa
del cristal, del cristal.

Coro:
Amo, lloro, canto, sueño
con claveles de pasión,
con claveles de pasión.
Amo, lloro, canto, sueño
para ornar las rubias crines
del potro de mi amador.
Yo nací en esta ribera
del Arauca vibrador,
soy hermana de la espuma,
de las garzas, de las rosas
y del sol.

Alma llanera

Pedro Elías Gutiérrez and Rafael Bolívar, arr. Ángel Sauce

English translation:

Verse 1:
I was born in this bank
of the vibrating Arauca River,
I am sister of its foam,
of the herons, of the roses,
I am sister of its foam,
of the herons, of the roses
and the sun, and the sun.

Verse 2:
I was lulled by the vivid reveille
of the breeze in the palm grove,
and so I have the soul
like the exquisite soul,
and so I have the soul
like the exquisite soul
of the crystal, of the crystal.

Chorus:
I love, I weep, I sing, I dream
with carnations of passion,
with carnations of passion.
I love, I weep, I sing, I dream
to adorn the blonde mane
of my lover's colt.
I was born in this bank
of the vibrating Arauca River,
I am sister of its foam,
of the herons, of the roses
and the sun.

El sancocho

Daniel Wallenberg & Elizabeth Wallenberg

Lyrics:

Ay que emoción,
me gusta tanto el sancochito a mí, con
mucha carne, mucho pollo,
y un poco de ají.

Y que decir de un buen ajiaco
listo pa' comer con aguacate,
las papas y el maíz.

Te invito a tí a disfrutar,
comer sabroso y
conversar.

Que vengan todos a celebrar,
hay empanadas, las de Pipián.

Te invito.
Sancocho de gallina,
que comida tan fina.
Postre de arequipe,
un tinto pa' encimar.

Light the candle my black, my black girl
Light the candle my black, my black girl
Light the candle my black, my black girl
Light the candle my black, my black girl

Little black girl come light the candle
Little black girl come light the candle
The cumbia is going to start in Marbella**
Near the sea and the stars

Light the candle that cumbiamba
Ask for a candle, light the candle
that the cumbiamba calls for a candle.

Little black girl come light the candle
Little black girl come light the candle
The cumbia is going to start in Marbella
The cumbia is going to start in Marbella

Light the candle that cumbiamba
Ask for a candle, light the candle
that the cumbiamba calls for a candle.

Cambiando, somos piel y corazón

English translation

Verse 1:
Mixed, we are mixed
The same story with another flavor
We come from everywhere
With dance, rhythm and lots of color
Then dance with me
Let this mixture break the ice
and break the shine
Mixed from everywhere
Changing, we are skin and heart

Pre-Chorus:
Yes, we're the blood that runs
through our veins
Yes, it's the feeling of my roots, so

I am a Colombian, I am American
I am a citizen of the world
I am a Mexican, I am a Dominican
The same race, the same color

To dance you don't need a language

We are the originals,
we are international

En mi Viejo San Juan

Noel Estrada, arr. Danny Wallenberg and Lisa Arnold

Lyrics:

Verso 1 (Todos):
En mi Viejo San Juan,
cuantos sueños forjé
en mis años de infancia.
Mi primera ilusión,
y mis cuitas de amor,
son recuerdos del alma.

Verso 2 (Todos):
Una tarde me fui
hacia extraña nación,
pues lo quiso el destino.
Pero mi corazón
se quedó frente al mar,
en mi Viejo San Juan.

Coro (Solo con todos):
Adiós (adiós, adiós)
Borinquen querida (tierra de mi amor).
Adiós (adiós, adiós)
mi diosa del mar (reina del palmar).

Me voy (ya me voy)
pero un dia volveré
a buscar mi querer,
a soñar otra vez,
en mi Viejo San Juan.

Verso 3 (Solo):
Pero el tiempo pasó
y el destino burló
mi terrible nostalgia. (oo)
Y no pude volver
al San Juan que yo amé,
pedacito de patria. (oo)

Verso 4 (Solo):
Mi cabello blanqueó, (ah)
y mi vida se va,
ya la muerte me llama.
Y no quiero morir (ah)
alejado de ti,
Puerto Rico del alma.

Coro (Solo con todos):
Adiós (adiós, adiós)
Borinquen querida (tierra de mi amor).
Adiós (adiós, adiós)
mi diosa del mar (reina del palmar).

Me voy (ya me voy)
pero un dia volveré
a buscar mi querer,
a soñar otra vez
en mi Viejo San Juan.
A buscar mi querer,
a soñar otra vez,
en mi Viejo San Juan. (mi San Juan)
