Now in its 70th season, the Hyde Park Youth Symphony is a cornerstone of youth music education on Chicago’s South and West Sides. Founded in 1955 in the living room of Claire Despres Oppenheim, HPYS began as a small chamber ensemble and quickly grew into a multi-level orchestral program serving young musicians from across the city.
Each year, HPYS serves nearly 100 students through its orchestral programs and Neighborhood Beginner Programs in Auburn Gresham, Bronzeville and other communities. These initiatives bring vital music education directly to neighborhood schools and community centers, breaking down barriers to participation and nurturing the next generation of young musicians.
With a commitment to excellence, access and community, HPYS offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to music education—fostering not only musical growth but also confidence, creativity and connection.
